Bob & Arlene's Okinawa Wedding 12.12.12

12.12.2012 is the busiest day of the year for weddings. At least here on Okinawa. Couples booked to have their wedding on this day as far back as a year and a half ago.

For the wedding photographer its a very busy day indeed! I was booked for two weddings this day.
The first was an early morning wedding out at the Manza ANA resort for a lovely couple from Hong Kong. I photographed this wedding for my old company Watabe Wedding and they take control of the copyrights so I'm not able to post examples from that shoot.

As soon as I was done there I raced down to the Laguna garden hotel to catch Arlene and her family visiting from the Philippines as they were getting ready.

We then traveled further south to their church for their Catholic wedding ceremony. Something very different for me as I usually shoot resort style weddings for the most part.

After the ceremony it was off to our old local Kirakira beach in Nishihara for a beach location shoot just in time for what photographers call "The Golden Hour". Beautiful afternoon golden light and a perfect time for shooting on the beach.

Next it was time to head to Camp Foster US military base for the reception party. The party went on till late that night with lots of fun, great food and dancing. This was quite a treat for me as I was allowed to enjoy the great food and drink along with the guests. Usually I'm never allowed eat/drink with the guests when I shoot with the various wedding companies which is fine but it's nice when doing a long shoot like this to be able to enjoy some great grub!

Also unlike Japanese weddings there was lots of dancing. I always wondered why they don't have dancing at Japanese wedding receptions. Its always a lot of fun and makes for some great photos.

Here is a slideshow with some sample photos from their big day.

Big congratulations again to Bob & Arlene! And have a fantastic time in Australia!

And thanks for choosing fotoShisa Photography!

Off Camera Flash Workshop – January 19th & 20th 2013

Merry Christmas everyone!

Back by popular demand, myself and +Chris Willson  will be holding another Off Camera Flash Workshop on January 19th and 20th.

Earlier this year we held our first "Strobist" workshop together and it was a huge success. Lots of people wanted to join the first one but missed out as it was limited to 10 people. This workshop will be limited to 12 people this time. The price is $150US for the two day workshop with myself (Pete Leong) and Chris Willson.

In the workshop we will cover everything dealing with getting your flash off the camera so you can get more creative with your lighting.

On the first day we will talk about the different types of strobes and how to get the most out of them on and off camera. The second day we will move from TTL to manual flash control, and from wired to wireless triggers. At the end of the weekend we will hit the beach and I will give a short masterclass in location lighting with a model.

For more information check out Chris's blog post

Mini engagement shoot at Toguchi beach

Recently did a little mini engagement type shoot for Andrew & Kathryn. Andrew & Kathryn are both stationed here on Okinawa with the Air Force and wanted something they could use on a Christmas card to send to friends and family back in the U.S. They requested to have their location as Toguchi Beach with its impressive rock arches. Combine this with some beautiful afternoon light and you have a perfect backdrop for an Okinawan engagement shoot. They also brought their little dog Baxter along for some shots as well, surprisingly well behaved and he would even look at the camera on que!

Here are a few more samples from our mini shoot.

First Senior Shoot

I remember a few years back when I first came Okinawa I was asked if I could shoot "Seniors". I was a little taken aback and replied with "hmm no shooting old folks is not really my thing sorry".  Little did I know that High School senior portraits are very popular part of an American kids graduation.

Now is the time of the year when the school kids are graduating and looking to have their portraits done so I headed out with Caleb here despite the bad weather conditions and made a few photos.

It was pouring down pretty much all day but I knew if the rain would let up even for just a few minutes we could set up a couple of lights and grab a few quick shots. And thats exactly what we did.

Here are a few of the results.

Caleb is from the country in Tennessee so he looked
most at home and natural in a natural farm setting.

Making a splash. Just mucking around while we were trying some reflections.

This was just an exposure and flash test shot but I think it looks kinda cool.

I Recently had the pleasure of being the photographer for a fun couple from main land Japan while they were visiting Okinawa for their wedding and beach shoot. On their big day there was not a cloud in the sky. Believe it or not its actually winter here on Okinawa. While some other parts of Japan are cold and snowy its hot and sunny down on our little island!

Here are just a couple of samples from their location shoot.

Merry Christmas!
