Daddy where's the picture?'

I pulled out a couple of my old manual film cameras (Olympus OM10 and an Asahi Pentax) for the kids to play with. Jenna kept taking photos and showing me the back of the camera with a confused look on here face. Where's the picture Daddy??
I tried to explain to Jet the concept of film and the inner workings of the camera. I blew his mind when I told him all the steps needed before we could see any photos from these cameras. Crazy how tech evolves.
Wonder what they will be shooting with when they are explaining this old school DSLR camera stuff in years to come. Probably 4D and Light field sensors, 100 gigapixel images at ISO 100,000,000.

Okinawa Wedding and Location shooting

Here's a slideshow from a recent shoot with a great fun couple that came over from Hong Kong to have their wedding here on Okinawa. We started with a shoot at Murasaki Mura for that traditional old Okinawan feel, then onto their actual wedding and beach shoot before finishing the day at Cape Zanpa.

We have a new page now where couples getting married through Watabe Wedding can select their photographer for their big day. The site isn't finished yet but there are a few of mine and other photographers sample shots up now. Drop by and check it out here

The Many Faces of Jelly Joy

Had a lazy afternoon so decided to set up a little mini studio on the kitchen table and shoot my daughter as she went through various expressions while pigging out on jelly. And to also try some macro shots of my new official Canon 4gb USB drive. I received it as a gift from the Hong Kong branch of my company Watabe Wedding while I was visiting for the recent wedding expo.

The detail in the body of the mini 7D is quite impressive as you can see. I was inspired to try depicting a Daddy and son kind of feel with the real Canon 7D in the shot looking down at the USB to show size difference.

Here's a shot of the simple set up on the kitchen table. I was using black light absorbing material for the background. This stuff is great! Kind of like a thin velvet paper that just sucks in any light hitting it. All lit with one light and a reflector.

Feb 2012 Hong Kong Wedding Expo trip

It was planned that I would travel to Ishigaki island to shoot a couple of weddings recently. Ishigaki is pretty much half way between here on Okinawa main island and Taiwan. Then just a few days before I was supposed to fly out, work tells me that I'll instead be going to Hong Kong to attend a big wedding expo there. This was the 2nd time I've been to HK for wedding and bridal shows and its always a great chance to meet other amazingly talented photographers from HK and Taiwan and of course to chat to new clients looking to come to Okinawa for their special day.
Pretty busy at our Watabe Wedding booth with
couples looking to book a destination wedding.

Some of the other photographers were not really interested in meeting and talking photography. Just there to bring in new customers and see me as more of a threat I guess. I was able to meet a couple of my photo heroes Muse Chan and Ray Chui who did not have a booth at the show but came out to catch up with me. They both do amazing work with pre wedding location shoots around the world.
Good to meet you guys! Check out Muse's work here and Ray's here.

A shoot I did for a couple on display.

When I wasn't at the wedding expo I took any chance I got to get out and explore the city more with my Fujifilm X100. One of my goals was to return to "The Peak" overlooking the city to try some night time shots looking over HK. Unfortunately it was pretty foggy most of the time. I managed to grab this one as the fog cleared for a couple of minutes.
Shot with Canon 5DmkII and 17-40mm f4L.

Here's some more things I found while wandering around before and after work all shot with the Fuji X100.

I thought this would make a kind of abstract street self portrait.

Crazy busy streets and fantastic camera and electronic shopping in Mongkok.

A guy with a story to tell.

Strange random street dancing. Love it!

So many amazing little camera shops selling both new and used gear. I picked up a few little accessories while there and will review them on the blog later.

Street markets. I always love visiting these places. All sorts of fake stuff. The trend right now seems to be fake Monster Beats by Dre. headphones. They were selling them everywhere.

Magic Okinawa Sunset

Just after arriving back to Okinawa from my Hong Kong biz trip we were blessed with this beautiful sunset off Zanpa outside Watabe's Aquagrace chapel.

I've seen a lot of sunsets from here but I think this one takes the cake.

Had a blast teaching another off camera flash workshop along with good friend and great photographer Chris Willson. We had 8 participants join the class for the two days and we went over the benefits of using off camera flash, different ways to get your flash off the camera, various lighting techniques,  and what happens when you use different diffuses to shape and soften the light.

Everyone got a chance on the last day to shoot with out model Clare on the beach and practice their new skills.

There's been quite few people already interested in the next photography workshop so we'll get something in the plans shortly.

Pete & Chris's workshop Jan 2012

Thanks again to everyone who came and to Chris for teaching with me!
